Day 8

What is this urge of mine to clothe and bundle my baby in handmade things?

I literally cannot stop making things for Peaceful Baby.  At the beginning of my pregnancy, I had the opposite problem.  I wouldn’t even look at knitting patterns or baby stuff out of fear that things would go wrong and I wouldn’t end up with a baby.  Far too many of us know the painful truth that a pregnancy doesn’t always result in a healthy baby.  (Today is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day) So, I guarded my urge to create baby things carefully until things were a little more likely to be okay.

A few weeks into my 2nd trimester I tentatively started looking at knitting patterns and queuing things up on Ravelry.  Matching gender-neutral patterns and yarn was a fun distraction, but eventually I had to actually knit something.  And then once I started, I haven’t been able to stop!  The same had been true for my sewing…

Whether it’s knitting, crochet, sewing, or making things for the nursery, every week seems to yield something new and handmade.  I feel like this is my way of showing love for this little creature I am dreaming of, feathering his/her nest so to speak.  For me, creating while pregnant is an act of nurturing both myself and my dreams for this baby.  Every stitch represents hope and dreams and positivity.  Creating these things also helps me to cope with some of my uncertainties and fears about becoming a parent.  Not sure what to expect from life?  Knit those anxieties away for a while!  Bust out the sewing machine and drown out the sound of your fears!

In a crazed Martha Stewart moment, I ripped up the valance that came with the bedding set we purchased for the crib and sewed up this pillowcase.  Then I sewed on some ribbons to tie the whole thing closed.  I didn’t want a matchy-matchy nursery, but sage green seems to slowly be seeping into every area of the room!  Guess there’s a theme now…

I have no plans to stop making baby things any time soon.  There may come a point where that changes, but for now I am deeply in love with the idea of creating things for this little one.  There are more cardigans and booties to be knit, a couple more blankets to be sewn, and a crazy ribbon mobile to make!

  1. So besides the crocheted blanket, what are the other items you sewed? I really like the prints!

And man I really like that pillow case! What set is that!? So cute!

The only thing I manage to sew so far is the bib. I wish I have more time!!!!
